The NYPD bomb squad investigated a suspicious item near Gracie Mansion and evacuated an adjacent park Tuesday, just four days after thwarting a terror attack there — only to later deem the container and its liquid nonhazardous, according to cops and law-enforcement sources.
“UPDATE: The device in Carl Schurz Park has been cleared and determined to be non-threatening,” the NYPD said in a tweet. “This was an instance of everyday New Yorkers following a clear message: If you see something, say something. Call 888-NYC-SAFE.”
Cops responded to East 86th Street near East End Avenue on the Upper East Side in Manhattan around midday after reports of a suspect container on the promenade there, law enforcement sources said.

The nearby Carl Schurz Park was evacuated as the investigation continued. Gracie Mansion, where the mayor lives, was not evacuated, officials said.
The item turned out to be a large jar similar to those used for protein powder, with camouflage tape around the body and black or gray tape around the top.
X-rays showed that the container, which was discovered in tall grass by a park attendant, had liquid inside.
Authorities later said it was not a danger and did not contain any hazardous material. They did not elaborate.
The tense situation came after two radicalized Pennsylvania teens tried to pull off an ISIS-inspired bombing outside the mayor’s residence nearby, authorities said.

Suspects Ibrahim Kayumi, 19, and Emir Balat, 18, are being held at the federal Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.

Both teens claimed they were inspired to try to launch an attack by the international terror group and hoped to claim more victims than the three people killed in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, according to a five-count criminal complaint unsealed Monday.
