UPPER EAST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) — Police say the all clear has been given after a suspicious package prompted closures on the Upper East Side near Gracie Mansion.
East End Avenue between East 85th and East 87th Street, as well as East 86th Street between York Avenue and East End Avenue were closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic on Tuesday afternoon.
Carl Schurz Park was also evacuated and closed.
The NYPD later said the device was cleared and was not life-threatening.
The NYPD acted out of an extreme amount of caution to examine a jar discarded in the park, just south of Gracie Mansion.
A parks department worker found the jar wrapped in tape and apparently containing liquid in an area of brush by the promenade, over the FDR Drive.
The discovery led to an extended investigation by the bomb squad, described as out of an abundance of caution.
The park was evacuated during the investigation, but Gracie Mansion was not.
The NYPD said it was an instance of everyday New Yorkers following a clear message: if you see something, say something.
