Former Jets quarterback Geno Smith will once again be the current Jets quarterback. Adam Schefter reports the Jets will reacquire their former second round pick in trade that involves a late round pick swap.

Smith was a second round pick out of West Virginia in 2013. His four year stint with the Jets was tumultuous. He was benched during his second season for ineffective play. After initially being named the starter in his third season, Smith suffered a broken jaw when he was punched by teammate IK Enemkpali in the locker room during training camp. Veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick took over the starting job and led the Jets to a 10 win season. A year later, Fitzpatrick himself was benched for ineffective play. Smith returned to the starting lineup, but the return was short lived as he suffered a torn ACL in his first start.

Geno left the Jets that offseason in free agency and bounced around the league. He finally found a home in Seattle. After spending a couple of years backing up Russell Wilson, Smith took over as starter in 2022 and put together three solid seasons.

In 2025 he was traded to the Raiders. His one season in Las Vegas went poorly, which facilitated this trade.

Per Tom Pelissero the Raiders will pay most of Smith’s salary.
