A 78-year-old Access-a-Ride passenger is dead and at least nine others are recovering at local hospitals after a crash in Gravesend involving a fire truck, police say.

Emergency personnel responded to West 11th Street and Avenue S just before 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Authorities say the fire truck was traveling eastbound on Avenue S when it struck a commercial van traveling northbound on West 11th Street. The van then hit an Access-a-Ride bus and the bus struck a Lexus.

EMS transported five firefighters, the operator of the commercial van and three bus passengers, including the 78-year-old, to local hospitals.

The 78-year-old man was pronounced dead at the hospital.

His identity has not been released as of Tuesday evening.
