In an action-packed weekend, App State softball went 2-0 against Furman University Friday and Saturday. Sunday, they beat Queens University of Charlotte twice. 

On Friday, App State’s defense crushed Furman with a 10-0 shutout in 5 innings. In the first inning alone, the Mountaineers took home 5 points.

This momentum carried over to the second inning. With the bases loaded, freshman infielder Taylor Schafer hit a home run, resulting in a 9-0 lead.

The opening game ended in a 10-0 App State shutout.

On Saturday, the Black and Gold scored 7 runs in the first 2 innings.

The third inning started with a score from sophomore outfielder Julia Girk. With the bases loaded, junior infielder Grace Barrett recorded a hit to the left side, allowing  senior infielder Makayla McClain to score.

Though the Mountaineers held a large lead, in the fifth and final inning, Furman scored their only point of the game. The game ended in a 15-1 App State win.

On Sunday, the Black and Gold played back-to-back games against Queens.

From the first inning, the Mountaineers were already dominating. With two outs, Schafer scored a double that fueled App State’s energy going into the following inning.

The offense continued to be an unstoppable force throughout the second inning. With the bases loaded, Schafer hit a home run, making the score 6-1. Freshman utility player Madison Fletcher added a double which widened the gap to 8-1.

Though Queens scored once in the second and third innings, App State scored 3 points in the fourth inning. 

The Saturday game ended in a 8-point Mountaineer win, with a final score of 11-3.

In the second game, App State maintained a shutout in the first inning. Following Schafer’s hit to center field, both her and McClain scored. Sophomore infielder Emilie Ching took one home and sophomore utility player Leah Gore scored another before the end of the inning.

In the fifth inning, the Mountaineers shut down Queens by keeping them at 3 points for the remainder of the game. The game was at an 8-3 App State lead.

The Black and Gold scored 3 points in the sixth and final inning. Following McClain’s hit to left center, McClain, Gore and senior outfielder Dakota Daniel all took home a point of their own.

The game ended in an 11-3 App State victory.

On Tuesday, App State travels to South Carolina to play the College of Charleston at 5 p.m.
