The driver of a New York City dump truck hit and killed a woman in Queens on Tuesday morning, according to police.
The Department of Transportation 2017 Mack dump truck was traveling east on Metropolitan Avenue, police said. The driver was attempting to turn right on to Lefferts Boulevard when they struck 31-year-old Nilufar Komilova of Queens, according to the NYPD.
Komilova suffered injuries to her head and torso and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services workers, police said.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic crash, and our hearts are with the victim’s loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” transportation department spokesperson Mona Bruno said in a statement. “We are committed to fully understanding what happened and if additional steps can be taken to prevent future crashes.”
The NYPD said it is continuing to investigate the incident. Police said the driver stayed at the scene.
Over the past decade, the city has added safety upgrades to its vehicle fleet to prevent drivers from speeding, address blind spots and reduce damage from side-impact collisions, officials said.
