1. Hochul says new taxes could drive wealthy out of N.Y.
Gov. Kathy Hochul is warning that raising taxes on high earners could push wealthy residents out of New York, a day after the New York State Legislature proposed new taxes on millionaires and large corporations.
Speaking at a forum hosted by Politico in Albany, Hochul said she’s not philosophically opposed to taxing the rich but worries the state could lose critical revenue if top earners leave.
2. NYPD officers hailed as heroes for work during botched attempted attack
A dramatic photo of NYPD Chief Aaron Edwards vaulting a barricade during an attempted bombing outside Gracie Mansion has spread widely online.
Edwards said instinct took over when a suspect tossed a lit device into a crowd during dueling protests Saturday.
3. Advocates call on city to end homeless sweeps
Housing advocates rallied outside New York City Hall Wednesday urging Mayor Zohran Mamdani to end homeless encampment sweeps.
Demonstrators with the “Stop the Sweeps” campaign said the policy forces people living on the streets to move without solving the housing crisis.
Mamdani had initially ended the practice after taking office but reinstated it this winter after more than 20 people died during extreme cold.
