PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. —

The New York Department of Transportation is bringing awareness to the state’s safety program for workers.

Officials said people were working in some dangerous conditions this winter to make sure our roads were clear.

That’s why Gov. Kathy Hochul (D), New York, wants to put work zone speed cameras on two-lane roads across the state, including in Plattsburgh.

There’s already legislation that puts cameras in work zones on controlled access highways, which officials said led to about 30% reduction in drivers’ speed.

New York Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez said this legislation is all about keeping workers safe.

“We want to protect them, that’s it,” Dominguez said. “Safety is critical. It’s critical to absolutely everything we do. We’re out there, making sure the roads are safe for people to use. And in turn, the public, all of us, need to make sure that they’re safe doing their jobs.”

Hochul’s executive budget also includes a proposal to protect highway workers against assault. This is all part of the governor’s “Let Them Build” initiative.

Here in Clinton County, transportation workers are getting ready to work on paving projects this summer.
