MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) — In New York City, the NYPD increased patrols at and around synagogues and other Jewish religious and cultural institutions across the five boroughs as a precaution, including at the temple Emanu- El on 5th Ave.

Gov. Kathy Hochul is calling the attack on a synagogue in Detroit a cowardly act of antisemitic violence.

Hochul thanked those protecting the city and said New York State Police will also increase patrols at religious sites across the state.

The response stems from an armed man who rammed his truck into a Detroit-area synagogue that triggered a fire and a gunfight with security.

The Department of Homeland Security identified the armed man as 41-year-old Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a naturalized citizen born in Lebanon. He was shot and killed by the security guard.

The FBI described the incident as a “targeted act of violence” against the Jewish community.

The FBI is also investigating a deadly shooting as an act of terrorism at Old Dominion University in Virginia. Authorities say the gunman walked into an R.O.T.C. classroom and opened fire. Students inside the room subdued the shooter.

During the struggle, the shooter was killed, as well as Lieutenant Colonel Brandon Shah.

Virginia’s governor described Shah as a devoted R.O.T.C. instructor.

The FBI identified the shooter as Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, a former Virginia National Guard member who had served time for attempting to aid ISIS a decade ago.
