Have you seen these nuts?
New York’s State Police is asking the public for help in a case that’s proving remarkably tough to crack.
Roughly 60,000 pounds of shelled walnuts — altogether worth about $50,000 — disappeared from two 52-foot trailers in the Bronx on March 2, authorities said. The walnut-weighted trucks were located near Hunts Point in the Bronx, the main hub of New York City’s food supply, officials said.
Walnuts, which are technically stone fruits, are common in muffins, cookies and brownies, or enjoyed on their own as a nutrient-rich snack. But police said looters were likely not hoarding 30 tons of walnuts for personal use, but planned to sell the pilfered product to retailers.
Authorities urged business owners and potential buyers to be on the lookout for anyone selling large quantities of the product for prices so low you’d be nuts to pass them up.
They said anyone spotting pallets of walnuts in strange places is should call the New York State Police Troop NYC at 212-459-7800.
