1. City to launch ‘pothole repair blitz’ Saturday after harsh winter
New York City will deploy more than 80 crews across all five boroughs tomorrow in a major effort to repair potholes, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced today.
The citywide “pothole repair blitz” began at 6 a.m., with crews working on streets and highways throughout the city. Officials expect thousands of potholes to be filled in a single day, with additional repairs planned in the coming weeks, according to a news release.
2. Bronx Week set to return, in reversal of decision to ‘pause’
A week after Bronx Week was put on pause for financial reasons, officials said the longstanding tradition will take place after all.
In a news release today, Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson’s office said the reversal came amid an “outpouring of support from community leaders, partners, and stakeholders stepping forward to help sustain this cherished tradition.”
3. Housing proposed at iconic Brooklyn Watchtower buildings site
The iconic Brooklyn Watchtower buildings could soon see new life after years of vacancy.
The Watchtower buildings served as the longtime headquarters of the Jehovah’s Witnesses up until a decade ago, known for their large, bright red “Watchtower” sign that now reads “Welcome.”
4. NYPD maintains security at Jewish sites after Michigan synagogue attack
The NYPD says it is maintaining patrols and visibility outside Jewish houses of worship and other institutions following an attack on a synagogue in Michigan yesterday.
Police say the department has been operating in a heightened alert environment since the United States military operation in Iran began. The deployment of officers to those locations will continue after a man rammed his vehicle into the Detroit-area synagogue, causing the building to catch fire.
5. Widow of slain officer testifies at murder trial in Queens
Prosecutors called the wife of NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller to testify yesterday in his murder trial, as the case against Guy Rivera continued at Queens Criminal Court.
Stephanie Diller told the court she and her husband had dated since she was 18 and married in 2019. Their only child, a 15-month-old son, was with them on the last day they saw Diller, March 25, 2024.
6. Eagle Academy of the Bronx beats Eagle Academy of Brooklyn in PSAL final
It was a thrilling Public Schools Athletic League championship between the Eagles… and the Eagles.
Eagle Academy of the Bronx scored a basket off a wild sequence in the final seconds of regulation to tie it up with Eagle Academy of Brooklyn yesterday night.
7. Report: Majority of 911 calls assigned to NYPD not related to crime
A new report The Vera Institute, a criminal justice reform group, says the majority of 911 calls the NYPD responds to are unrelated to crime.
The analysis found that almost 3.7 million 911 calls were assigned to receive an NYPD response last year. Of those calls, only 41.6% were labeled as “crime-related.” The rest were labeled as “non-crime,” including co-responses with EMS and responses to mental health emergencies.
8. ‘Design Competition’ lets Bronx students become filmmakers for a week
Comp Sci High, a charter school in the South Bronx, ditched the typical high school curriculum for a week and instead, taught students about filmmaking. It’s part of their biannual initiative called “Design Competition.”
Students are split into teams and have 72 hours to make a documentary about their lives in the Bronx. This year’s winning films will be screened at the New York African Film Festival in May.
