NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) — New York City is offering a brand new initiative, perfect for the city with the most movie appearances.

The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment is launching the inaugural “Art House Cinema Week,” set to kick off on March 20 and run through March 26.

As part of the week-long program, New York City cinephiles can enjoy affordable screenings, discounted memberships and concessions, custom programming at nearly 30 independent local theaters and 5,000 free tickets provided by MOME for select theaters.

Eligible New Yorkers can get free tickets on the day of their preferred screening at the theater. Those who qualify for free tickets include New York City teachers, active-duty military personnel and veterans with valid ID or service record, people with disabilities with the presentation of their half-fare MetroCard or Access-A-Ride ID, families registered with “Cool Culture,” SNAP/EBT cardholders with the presentation of their SNAP/EBT card and CUNY students with ID.

“At a time when many New Yorkers and independent theaters are feeling the squeeze of the affordability crisis, we’re stepping in with a simple way to open doors and strengthen our creative ecosystem,” said Rafael Espinal, commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME).

Among some of the programming highlights for Art House Cinema Week include Terror Tuesdays at Alamo Drafthouse, Q&A sessions with directors at Angelika Film Center, concession discounts at Film at Lincoln Center, guided drawing exercises for “Fantastic Mr. Fox at Jacob Burns Film Center and multiple film screenings such as “Pinocchio” and “Kill Bill” on 35mm at Metrograph.
