For the June primary, more than 34% of New Yorkers voted early in-person. Almost 4% voted early by mail and nearly 57% voted in person on Election Day.

“When we try and stuff all of the people who want to vote into 16 hours on Election Day, it creates long lines. And if there is any unexpected problem with the equipment or the ballot, there’s no time to fix it. But if a problem arises during early voting, well you can come back another day,“ said Susan Lerner, executive director of Common Cause, a nonpartisan group encouraging New Yorkers to get to the polls early.

At Fort Hamilton High School’s polling place in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, voters lined up ahead of the 9 a.m. opening time to make sure they were some of the first to cast their ballots citywide.

“I waited in those lines they are long. The earlier you get here the better,” Riad Morrar said.

“I just want to get it over with, and you never know what the weather is going to be like by the end of the week. It’s important, this is an important vote,” Linda, a local resident, said.
