Authorities are investigating after a man was found dead on a Midtown subway platform Saturday evening.

According to law enforcement sources, police were called to the 34th Street and 8th Avenue subway station just before 7 p.m. on March 14 after a man was spotted lying motionless in the transit hub. Cops from Transit District 2 say they arrived on the northbound C and E platform to a 55-year-old Brooklyn man unconscious and unresponsive.

EMS responded and transported the man to Lenox Hill Hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead. His identity is being withheld pending family notification.

Sources with knowledge of the investigation report that the man had been the victim of an assault minutes earlier. The sources say he had been punched in the face but appeared to be fine and was seen walking around the platform and using his cellphone before collapsing. It is unclear if the assault is related to his death at this time or if the man suffered some kind of medical emergency.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.
