The New York Mets have not been shy about spending in recent years, something Steve Cohen promised to do for the franchise.

However, when teams sign players to those types of contracts, there are often going to be a few bad ones, and that’s been the case for Cohen more often than not.

Kelly didn’t hold back his words when saying the worst contract on the roster is Frankie Montas, noting that the reasons behind him being DFA’d were clear.

“This one is pretty simple… Frankie Montas posted a 6.28 ERA across just 38.2 innings for the Mets last season,” Kelly noted.

The situation became even worse after Montas suffered a significant injury that will keep him sidelined for an extended period of time. The veteran right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery last September, meaning he likely won’t pitch during the 2026 campaign.

“Knowing that, the Mets designated him for assignment this past November, bringing an end to an unfortunate, yet expensive tenure in Flushing.”

Fortunately for New York, the organization is backed by one of the wealthiest owners in professional sports. Because of that financial flexibility, the impact of the contract may not be as bad as it would be for many other teams.
