The Newburgh Enlarged City School District is hosting community conversations as a part of a dialogue between parents, school board members and the superintendent.

Parents and school board members asked Newburgh district staff about safety and security, the theme of the open forum discussion Friday night. It comes after what’s described as a serious incident between a student and teacher this week that put the teacher in the hospital.

Newburgh safety and security director Stephen Sager says the district will work to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

“We look at the possible causes and investigate the reasons why and if changes are necessary, we enact changes,” Sager said.

Newburgh Superintendent Jackielyn Manning Campbell says that candid conversations like these separate fact from sensationalized fiction. She says the reality is that safety upgrades and monitor hirings have made the district safer.

Chase Tyler, a local parent, says he came away satisfied with the night’s talk.

“They are really paying attention to safety,” he said. “I went to the meeting last week as well about the vaping workshop and I think that the safety program was pretty good and robust here.”
