Furman
CLINTON, S.C. – Sophomore striker Emily Currie of the Presbyterian College lacrosse team threw out the life jacket on Sunday afternoon, hitting the match-winning goal with 23 seconds on the clock that enabled PC to thwart Manhattan 13-12 at Bailey Memorial Stadium.
Currie scored four of her match-high six goals in the second half of a wildly entertaining duel, just one shy of her personal record to help the Blue Hose claim victory in the non-conference closer.
The entire game was played within a two-point window as Presbyterian never led by more than one. Manhattan assumed the lead with 15 seconds left in quarter number two, and the Scotsmen did not jump back in front again until Currie’s dagger.
Alyssa Perez and Madeleine Lowrance also had multi-goal efforts in Sunday’s thriller, while another highlight came from rookie Hope Lunardi who found her first collegiate score just before the break.
PC’s third win of the season and second at home, they’ll enjoy a 10-day rest period before the schedule shifts to Big South terrain. Head coach Eric Clakeley‘s club will host Furman on Wednesday, March 25.
FINAL SCORE: Presbyterian, 13 – Manhattan, 12
RECORDS: Presbyterian (3-6) | Manhattan (1-7)
LOCATION: Bailey Memorial Stadium (Clinton, S.C.)
NOTABLES
– The game-winner by Currie brings to mind another recent last-second win that happened 13 months ago at Longwood: a hit by Emma Claire Mills with less than two ticks on the board (that coincidentally was assisted by Currie).
– A native of Maryland, Currie captained the Blue Hose offense through otherwise trying times and was responsible for all three of the team’s makes in the final period.
– Defenseman Avery West was her usual self as Presby held the Jaspers scoreless for the last 11 minutes of play, as the senior led the squad in ground ball pickups (6). She and Miranda Castilla added up for seven caused turnovers.
– Kayleigh Aitken played the first 41 minutes at goalie before leaving the rest of the match up to sophomore Morgan Thompson. The latter would earn the win after allowing just one make in nearly 19 minutes.
– PC forced 21 Manhattan takeaways to help make up for a 17-8 discrepancy in draw controls. Almost 70 percent of Presbyterian’s shots-on-goal were converted into points (13-of-19).
– Currie and Perez have both notched a single-game stat line of six goals this season, happening in respective wins over Manhattan and Delaware State. They have both scored at least once in all nine matches thus far.
HOW IT HAPPENED
– The Blue Hose won the opening frame by a 3-2 count but found themselves behind at halftime after the visitors secured four of the last six goals in the next stanza.
– Remarkably, PC was able to tie up the score at 9-9, 10-10, 11-11, and 12-12 before finally getting over the hump courtesy of Currie.
– The second-half differential was 7-5 in Presby’s favor, overcoming the scoreboard and a tide of rain that persisted for most of the 4th quarter.
– Sunday was the second-ever meeting between the two schools, with PC avenging a 2018 defeat to the Jaspers. Manhattan becomes the 35th program that has taken at least one loss to the Blue Hose since the turn to Division I in the late 2000’s.
