CANARSIE, Brooklyn (PIX11) — Fire crews rushed to a Brooklyn neighborhood early Sunday morning after flames tore through a home, leaving several people injured.
When firefighters arrived at 124 Conklin Ave. in Canarsie, thick smoke filled the air as neighbors woke up to the sight of a house engulfed in flames.
The two-alarm fire broke out inside a three-story home, starting on the first floor and quickly spreading to the second.
Vincent Dixon, who has been a member of the Canarsie Church of Christ next door for 25 years, says the sight was heartbreaking. “I woke expecting to come to church today and woke up to a bunch of messages and videos of flames, and it’s kind of like a shock,” Dixon said.
The church sustained only minor damage. “The church is doing okay; there are men over there fixing up the holes right now, so thankfully, there will be protection from the rain later,” Dixon added.
Six people were hurt, four residents and two firefighters. Two of the residents suffered serious injuries and were taken to Brookdale Hospital.

Minister Chuck Obunse from a church in Rockaway says one of the injured is his close friend. “This lady is a very close friend of mine,” he said. “They said her left leg is broken.”
Still, Obunse says faith remains at the center of how the community is responding. “We know that GOD is able to do all things so everything is fine and everything will be okay,” he said.
For Dixon, it’s a moment of deep loss but also resilience. “I just want to offer them prayers, I can’t even say encouragement because it’s an unfortunate situation, they lost so much,” he said.
Despite the damage, neighbors say their faith is guiding them forward as the community rebuilds after the fire.
The American Red Cross registered four households (nine adults, one child) for emergency assistance, including financial aid and temporary lodging. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
