Indian restaurants from other cities are testing the New York market, including London’s recent. Ambassadors Clubhouse in Nomad and the forthcoming Dishoom, Houston’s Musaafer, and others. Now, an acclaimed Chicago chef is opening not one but three new Indian dining and drinking spots in Manhattan this year.
Chef Sujan Sarkar is expanding his Chicago Michelin-starred Indian tasting menu restaurant, Indienne, in May, followed by a brand-new British Indian chophouse, Elder, and a cocktail bar, Apas, both in the summer. The three establishments will be found in the luxury residential building Henry Hall at 515 West 38th Street, near 10th Avenue.
Indienne New York will be a 36-seat space, with meat, pescatarian, vegetarian, and vegan tasting menu options.
Elder takes its name from elderflower, which is used in both South Asian and British cooking, per the press release. The British Indian chophouse will serve dry-aged meats and seafood, tableside dessert carts, and gin-centric cocktails.
Cocktail bar Apas is named after the Sanskrit word for “water.” The drinks will have South Asian flavors with plants and flowers.
Elder will be on the ground floor of the West 38th Street building; Indienne and Apas will be on the second floor.
Sarkar, who was a James Beard finalist in 2024 in the Best Chef: Great Lakes category, isn’t new to cooking in New York: he opened modern Indian restaurant Baar Baar in the East Village in 2017 (it closed last fall). His culinary resume includes working in London, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and, most recently, Chicago.
He opened Indienne in Chicago in 2022 and won its Michelin star the following year, one of the few Indian restaurants with the accolade in America. He followed that with Middle Eastern rooftop Sifr in 2023; South Asian bakery and chai cafe Swadesi in 2024; and regional Indian restaurant Nadu in 2025, which was named as one of Eater’s best restaurants in the country in 2025.
