Billy Crystal led a moving tribute to the beloved filmmaker at the 98th Academy Awards as stars from When Harry Met Sally, Stand by Me and The Princess Bride gathered on stage three months after Reiner and his wife were found dead and their son was charged with their murders
The late Rob Reiner was honored during an emotional tribute at the 98th Academy Awards on March 15, as actors who worked closely with the legendary actor-director gathered to celebrate his legacy in film. One by one, the stage at the Dolby Theatre filled with A-list performers connected to Reiner’s remarkable run of beloved films.

Notable cast members from When Harry Met Sally, This Is Spinal Tap, Stand by Me and The Princess Bride stood together to honor their friend and collaborator. Leading the tribute was actor and comedian Billy Crystal, a longtime collaborator and close friend of the Reiner family. Crystal and Reiner’s friendship dates back to 1976, years before their classic collaboration on When Harry Met Sally. “We became the closest of friends,” Crystal once said.
Meg Ryan, Jerry O’Connell, Demi Moore, Mandy Patinkin, Carol Kane, Kathy Bates, and others stood on stage, somberly paying tribute to the man who gave them so much.

Crystal told the Oscars crowd on Sunday evening, “My friend Rob’s movies will last for lifetimes. They were about what makes us laugh and cry… and what we aspire to be: kinder, funnier and more human.”
Crystal also spoke about Reiner’s beautiful partnership with his wife, photographer and producer Michele Singer Reiner, describing the pair as “unstoppable.” According to Crystal, Michele not only worked alongside her husband on film projects but also played an important role in their shared advocacy for social causes, including marriage equality across the nation.
“A gifted photographer, she not only produced films with Rob, but it was her energy that had them working tirelessly to fight social injustice,” Crystal said, ensuring to bolster Singer Reiner’s talents as well. During the in-memoriam segment honoring the film industry figures lost over the past year, the score from The Princess Bride played softly in the background, leaving barely a dry eye in the crowd.

Crystal is also no stranger to publicly poking fun at his longtime friend. Over the years, he participated in several celebrity “roasts” hosted by the now-defunct Friars Club. At a 2000 roast honoring Reiner, Crystal quipped about the filmmaker’s body of work: “His films make you think… they make you think, what the hell am I doing here?” Cameras cut to Reiner in the audience, laughing along and clearly enjoying the joke.
Oscar host Conan O’Brien, who had hosted the now-infamous holiday party with the Reiners in attendance the night of their deaths, said ahead of the ceremony that the tribute would be difficult to capture. “It’s hard to sum up,” O’Brien told reporters on the red carpet. “But it’s going to be a very powerful part of the show.” Some viewers wondered if O’Brien might reference the fact that he hosted the final party the Reiners attended before their deaths. Instead, recognizing the gravity of the situation, he chose not to joke about it. The tribute came three months after Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner were found dead inside their Los Angeles home on December 14, 2025.
The case quickly took an unbelievably tragic and shocking turn when the couple’s son, Nick Reiner, was arrested the following day. Nick Reiner, 32, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances, as it’s been alleged he used a knife to stab both of his parents to death. He has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody without bail. In February, Reiner waived his right to a speedy trial and is scheduled to return to court on April 29. If convicted, he could face life in prison without parole or the death penalty. Reiner is currently represented by a public defender after high-profile attorney Alan Jackson withdrew from the case without explanation, fueling speculation the departure may have been tied to finances. Sources close to Los Angeles say multiple defense attorneys are still expressing interest in taking on the case and attempting to contact Reiner, though it’s unclear whether any of them has made contact. Page Six previously reported that the only visitor Reiner has seen in jail is his current public defender.

Despite the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner, the Oscars tribute focused on Reiner’s career as a filmmaker. Crystal concluded his remarks about his dear friend with a line from The Princess Bride, “Buddy, what fun we had storming the castle.”
