New York, NY (March 16, 2026) — A storm system is expected to bring periods of rain, gusty winds and the potential for localized flooding across New York City through Monday night, with the greatest impacts likely during the afternoon and evening commute.
Light rain was already moving through the city Monday morning, with additional showers and possible thunderstorms expected as a strong front pushes across the region. Forecasters say the weather is likely to become more active later in the day, when heavier downpours and stronger wind gusts could create hazardous travel conditions on roads and highways throughout the five boroughs.
Officials are warning that low-lying areas, underpasses and locations with poor drainage could see ponding or minor flooding if heavier rain develops. While the system is not expected to produce widespread major flooding, brief bursts of intense rainfall may overwhelm drains in isolated spots and lead to delays for drivers and transit riders.
In addition to the rain threat, winds are expected to strengthen through the day, with the potential for powerful gusts by Monday evening as the front moves through. The combination of wet roads, reduced visibility and strong winds could make for a difficult evening commute, especially in exposed areas and along major roadways.
Temperatures are expected to reach the low 60s before cooler air arrives behind the system late Monday night. Conditions should gradually improve overnight into Tuesday, though breezy and much cooler weather is expected to follow.
New Yorkers are being urged to allow extra travel time, avoid driving through flooded streets and secure loose outdoor items before winds increase. The latest forecast suggests the worst of the storm will move out by early Tuesday, but city residents are being advised to stay alert for changing conditions throughout the day.
New York, sustained rain and wind could come as early as tonight and stay through to Tuesday — with the potential for flooding in stretches of the city.
