WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – Monday morning’s high winds prompted some north country schools to delay opening.
Shortly after 5 AM, South Jefferson Central School delayed opening by two hours, with AM pre-kindergarten and AM BOCES canceled for South Jefferson. Watertown – which has a large number of students who walk to school – also delayed by two hours, followed by other schools.
And schools weren’t the only thing affected: National Grid’s outage map at 5:15 AM showed a string of outages affecting hundreds of customers, scattered from lower Jefferson County up through the Gouverneur area.
(By 9 AM, the number of customers without service had lessened substantially and was under 500 in the north country.)
7 News meteorologist Kris Hudson reported early Monday that the high winds brought down trees and power lines.
The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning for all of today in Jefferson and Lewis counties, until 8 PM tonight. The worst of it is this morning, with wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour.
