The NYPD said it is investigating after an off-duty officer shot and critically wounded a man in the Bronx on Monday night.

Police responded to a 911 call around 9:15 p.m. about a shooting near the corner of West 231st Street and Albany Crescent in Kingsbridge, according to the department. When officers arrived, they found a 30-year-old man who had been shot in the head, officials said.

Police said the man was taken by private means to a local hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

Officials did not immediately identify the man, the off-duty officer or their rank.

Authorities said the incident was related to a previously reported stolen vehicle and the off-duty officer had an interaction with several men before firing his weapon.

They said the officer is on modified duty while the NYPD’s Force Investigation Division looks into what sparked the shooting.

Police have not made any arrests in the incident, according to officials.
