SPARTANBURG — County Council voted March 16 to provide a tax break to bathroom facility manufacturing company Schluter Systems in return for at least $336 million and 125 jobs.

Council approved second reading of the fee-in-lieu-of-tax agreement to lower the property tax assessment ratio for the company’s planned facility at 1751 Victor Hill Road, Duncan, from 10.5 percent down to 4 percent in return for the investment.

The terms call for a minimum of $400 million invested in the site with no required number of jobs, or at least $336 million invested with at least 125 jobs created.

The company will be producing the waterproof walls for bathrooms and showers that hold bathroom tiles.

“They’re going to be … basically manufacturing bathroom systems,” County Administrator Cole Alverson said.

“They make the backing that the ceramic tile is mounted to,” added county attorney John Harris.

County records say the expected investment is $420 million with 225 jobs.

Phase one of the project must be complete within three years and the full investment must be made within the following eight years or the FILOT will be terminated, the agreement says.
