ROCHESTER, N.Y. — New Yorkers are being warned about scams related to the state’s inflation refund checks.

On Sept. 26, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that New Yorkers eligible for the inflation refund check would soon be getting them by mail.

The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office reported that some residents have gotten scam text messages claiming to be from the New York State Division of Tax and Finance or the non-existent “New York Department of Revenue.”

The sheriff’s office says the messages, known as “smishing scams,” try to steal people’s personal information.

No state agency will text, email, or call you about refund checks, the sheriff’s office says. Residents are urged to be cautious and protect their personal information.
