A member of the NYPD’s security detail for Gracie Mansion was suspended without pay after department officials said he shot and critically injured a man in the Bronx on Monday night while the officer was off duty.
According to police, the incident unfolded around 9:15 p.m. near the corner of West 231st Street and Albany Crescent in Kingsbridge.
Authorities said the officer, whose identity they have not released, confronted several men over a previously reported stolen vehicle. Officials said they could not provide further details about whose vehicle was involved.
The officer fired his weapon and struck a 30-year-old man in the head, police said. The man was transported by private means to a local hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
NYPD officials did not immediately identify the injured man as the investigation continued on Wednesday. The unions that represent police officers and detectives did not respond to inquiries right away.
