A fire broke out in the Van Nest section of the Bronx, leaving residents at a shelter home shaken and rushing to safety.

Neighbors say the flames at 1635 Van Buren Street spread quickly, with some residents running out barefoot.

Ricardo Gomez said he only had time to grab his bible and a hoodie before escaping. Ricardo made sure others got out safely, too.

Another resident told News 12 that someone may have been smoking behind the building before the fire started. The FDNY says one person was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Fire marshals did not immediately release the cause of the fire.
