One man was critically injured during a shooting incident with an off-duty NYPD officer in the Bronx on Monday, according to the NYPD.
“My girl call me, she say, ‘we got shot.’ I’m like, ‘What?’” said Ada Gomez, the manager of The Bronx Public. “And she told me, ‘What do I do?’ I said, ‘call 911.’”

Police said the shooting happened shortly after 9 p.m. on West 231st Street near Albany Crescent in Kingsbridge. A surveillance video showed a man getting out of a dark-colored car, pointing a gun at another man behind a white car.
Another angle of the same footage showed the two men on the ground in front of a white car.
The shooting stems from an interaction involving an off-duty NYPD officer, according to authorities. Sources said the officer believed the individuals were stealing his vehicle, and he fired the shot that struck one man in the head.
Abdullah Almahmoud works at a pizzeria just feet away from the shooting.
“People told me, ‘people are shooting,’” he said. “Somebody is shooting here. This is very sad.”
“We are very, very scared. We are very scared,” Almahmoud added.
The NYPD said the 30-year-old man who was shot in the head was transported to the hospital by private means in critical condition.
Employees of The Bronx Public said that a gunshot also pierced the window of the restaurant while people were inside.
“I was terrified until I got here, when I don’t know if someone was hurting,” Gomez said. “That was my concern. That nobody could hurt them. The customers. They are fine. And my staff is safe.”
The restaurant manager believes the officer should not have fired his gun.
“I know you train to be a police officer, but you’re a human being. You know you can hurt somebody else,” she said.
Police are investigating and the off-duty officer has been suspended without pay, according to authorities.
