“Do you want to go down the path of your father?” Oscilloscope Labs has revealed the official US trailer for an indie film titled Mad Bills to Pay, made by Bronx native filmmaker Joel Alfonso Vargas as his first feature breakout debut. The film’s full official title is Mad Bills to Pay: (or Destiny, dile que no soy malo) – this originally premiered at the 2025 Sundance Filmfestival Festival more than a year ago, where it won the NEXT Special Jury Award & Innovator Prize. Summer in The Bronx. He sells “nutcracker” cocktails, gets high, stays moving. Then she moves in. Two kids in a cramped apartment, playing house until the city reminds them how fast the streets make you grow up. A story about the challenges of life in The Bronx, New York City. Writer-director Joel Alfonso Vargas turns his hometown into the heartbeat of his debut feature, teaming up with discovery talent Collado & Checo, to deliver a raw and deeply authentic look at life in The Bronx. With humor and grit, Vargas paints a tender portrait of the chaos and charm of urban life, and the ups & downs of youthful abandon when things take an unexpected turn. In a tight knit Dominican American community in The Bronx, Rico (Juan Collado) is hustling his way through the summer, selling bootleg ”nutcracker” cocktails out of a beach cooler and chasing girls without a care in the world. But when his teenage girlfriend, Destiny (Destiny Checo), begins crashing at his place with his family, turning their small apartment into a stage for their messy, complicated young love, it’s only a matter of time before they’re hit with the sobering reality of growing up too fast in a city that waits for no one. Mad Bills to Pay: (or Destiny, dile que no soy malo) is written and directed by Bronx native indie filmmaker Joel Alfonso Vargas, making his feature directorial debut after many other short films previously.
