BUFFALO, NY – The Manhattan Jaspers Men’s Soccer team (4-7-2, 3-3-1 MAAC) took down the Golden Griffins of Canisius University (4-8-0, 2-5-1 MAAC) with a one-nil clean sheet inside the Demske Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling to Fairfield in a critical conference fixture in Riverdale just seven days ago, the Jaspers were poised to respond in a commanding way.
Nice and early in Western New York, the Green and White faced a plethora of attempts from the Golden Griffins but poised and up to the task was senior goalkeeper Ludvig Malberg through the first 25 minutes.
Manhattan added its first shot nearly halfway into the first half off two set piece opportunities.
Just five minutes into the second half, Canisius attempted to send a pass down the near touchline but was intercepted by Manhattan. James Lucas and Max Asplin-Rowley paired to find the back of the net, but were unsuccessful off the crossbar, before the captain and graduate midfielder Henry Hamilton buried the loose change to give the Jaspers a one goal edge.
The Green and White continued its onslaught of attempts after posting the icebreaker with two of three from Lucas, and one from Felipe Arruda.
After the Golden Griffins were down to ten men due to a second yellow card shown, the Jaspers held suit following nearly 10 minutes of pressure from the Griffins down the stretch, but ultimately was not enough to equalize.

QUOTES FROM THE JASPERS
Head Coach Tom Giovatto: “This was a win for our seniors, especially after a hard loss on Senior Day. We felt we weren’t as sharp in the first half to create attacks. At half time, we gave our seniors the responsibility to change the game, with Henry, Felipe, Thiago, and James all playing higher up. They helped us score and drive the team forward, and then Ludo was dominate in the air to help close out the game. We have a big test now on Wednesday and need to recover, learn, and be ready to give our all for three points.”
Senior goalkeeper Ludvig Malberg: “Very proud of the boys today, long away trip but we were focused from start to finish and made sure to take the three points home today. Well-deserved points that we needed from this trip, a real fight were we never backed out and made sure to do the job. Another clean sheet and I can’t thank the team enough; we need to make sure to keep this momentum going forward to stay in the playoff spots to give us the best possible chance of winning this conference!”
