U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand wants tariff refund money to go toward providing a tax rebate to families.
The New York lawmaker introduced the “Tariff Refunds for Working Families Act.”
She said the rebate would go to families making $180,000 or less per year.
“The way it, the bill is written, it’s $600 for a single person, $1,200 for a married couple. If you have two kids, $2,400 for the kids as well,” Gillibrand said.
This comes after a new report from the center of American Progress found nearly every state has lost blue-collar jobs as a result of tariffs.
A federal judge in New York ruled earlier this month that companies that paid tariffs struck down last month by the Supreme Court are due refunds. U.S. Customs and Border Protection said it is working on a system to simplify the refund process that would be ready in 45 days. That was on March 6.
