MANHATTAN, IL — The Manhattan Junior High wrestling team ended a remarkable 2025–2026 season with a historic runner-up finish at the IESA State tournament, marking a milestone year for the rapidly growing program.

This year, the Demons achieved several program firsts, including their first-ever state finalists and their first-ever 5th grade All-State medalists. The team’s success at the state level reflects years of dedication and steady growth, Manhattan District 114 said.

“We are incredibly proud of our MJHS Wrestling team for a truly outstanding season,” said Gina Burlison, Director of Athletics & Activities.

“Finishing as state runner-up is a tremendous accomplishment and a testament to the hard work, resilience, and dedication these athletes and coaches have shown all year. With two second-place finishers, two third-place finishers, one fourth-place, one fifth-place finisher, and a state runner-up title as a team, this group proved they can compete at the highest level and are an absolute force. They represented our school and community with Demon Pride, and we couldn’t be more excited about what they’ve achieved.”

Principal Vince Perillo also praised the team’s growth and continued success.

“The growth of the wrestling program in their short history has been tremendous due to the effort and commitment of our coaches, our athletes, and our parents,” Perillo said. “Our wrestling program has won a regional championship in three of the last four years, and this year at State, having six wrestlers make the podium and coming back to Manhattan with a State Runner-Up Trophy solidifies them as a powerhouse. We are excited to see the future of the program and what is to come in the years ahead.”
