On Thursday, Mayor Zohran Mamdani signed an executive order creating an Office of Community Safety.

The mayor says the office is aimed at bringing a new coordinated approach to crime prevention while reducing the role of police in responding to mental health emergencies. Daniela Gilbert, the director of the Redefining Public Safety initiative at the criminal justice reform group The Vera Institute, joined NY1’s Shannan Ferry on “News All Day” to discuss the new office.

“It makes sense to start with a lean office and build on the strength of services that exist already,” Gilbert said. “Figure out where greater coordination is needed and where more funding would make the biggest difference.”
