State boys basketball championship returns to Binghamton

  • March 21, 2026

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WBNG) — The New York State Public High School Athletic Association boys basketball championship returns to Visions Veterans Memorial Arena Thursday, with games running through Sunday, March 22.

The first game tips off at 2:30 p.m. on March 19.

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar said the tournament carries significance beyond the court.

“People are staying in our hotels, eating in our restaurants, shopping in our stores, and supporting local businesses,” Garnar said. “And that’s why events like this matter so much.”

Dr. Robert Zayas, executive director of the NYSPHSAA, said the city’s backing is a factor in the association’s decision to return.

“The amount of support that the city of Binghamton provides to the Public High School Athletic Association is outstanding and that’s a reason why we continue to consider Binghamton as a host site for our state basketball championships,” Zayas said.

Judi Hess, director of Visit Binghamton, said the event gives the community an opportunity to welcome visitors.

“We also love inviting people into our community all the time to taste our fantastic restaurants to stay in our wonderful hotels and to just see all that there is to see and do around this community,” Hess said. “So we know they’re gonna have a great time and we hope they make great memories that last long after the final buzzer.”
