LONG BEACH – The Long Beach Poly girls flag football team defeated Norco 26-7 Saturday to move on to the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs.
Quarterback Brooklyn Richardson led Poly (14-11) by completing 9 of 17 passes for 257 yards and three touchdowns. She added 104 rushing yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.
Neveah Johnson led the Jackrabbits receiving corps with 65 yards and two touchdowns on two receptions.
Richardson has one goal in mind.
“I’m ready, I know we can win this,” Richardson said. “This is our time for sure. I’m ready to win this championship, take it home and sleep well.”
Richardson completed passes to four different receivers in the game. She said she felt confident putting the ball in their hands, especially Johnson.
“It feels great,” Richardson said. “I don’t have anything to worry about when they are on the field, I can count on them for sure. Anything we put our minds to we can do it.”
As for Johnson, Richardson added: “I know she can catch it. If I can put the ball right where she needs it, she’s going to run into it and she’s got it beat.”
Monica Goggins batted down two passes for the Jackrabbits defense while Neela Bagley reeled in an interception.
Poly will face Millikan or Glendora in the quarterfinals Tuesday.
The Poly defense set up its offense for its first score. First Goggins batted down a Mya Arriola pass. On the next play, Bagley intercepted Arriola’s pass at the Norco 45.
On Poly’s ensuing possession, Richardson found Johnson over the middle for a catch-and-run that went for a 28-yard score. Poly had a 7-0 lead after the conversion.
Poly doubled its lead with 3:31 left in the half. With the ball at the Poly 10, Richardson connected with Kiele Ho-Ching for a 70-yard touchdown pass and a 14-0 lead.
Richardson used her feet to score Poly’s next touchdown, running up the middle and pirouetting through three Norco defenders before sprinting to the end zone for a 32-yard touchdown run and a 20-0 Poly lead after they missed the conversion try.
Poly’s quarterback wasn’t done racking up the scores. With 4:35 left in the third quarter, Richardson hit Johnson again for a 37-yard touchdown pass and a 26-0 lead for Poly after a second missed conversion attempt.
Norco (14-6) scored the final points of the game with a minute left when Arriola found Ryleigh Kennedy in the end zone for an 8-yard touchdown pass.
Arriola completed 13 of 32 passes for 89 yards and a touchdown. She threw one interception. She also led the rushing attack, gaining 50 yards on 13 carries.
Ryley Rocheleau caught seven passes for 62 yards for Norco.
Taylin Beadle batted a ball down for the Norco defense.
