The New York Yankees are gearing up for Opening Day later this month and are having to make some final decisions about their roster to start the year. One of the most anticipated decisions has already been made regarding outfielder Jasson Dominguez.

Just a couple of short years ago, Dominguez was viewed as an up-and-coming star. He was one of the top prospects in baseball.

Unfortunately, he has been unable to live up to the hype thus far.

Ahead of Opening Day, the Yankees and manager Aaron Boone have made the decision to demote Dominguez to Triple-A. He will not begin the 2026 MLB season on the Major League roster.

With that being said, Boone has spoken out and provided more details about why that decision was made.

Aaron Boone Gets Honest on Yankees Demoting Jasson Dominguez

Despite having a strong spring training with New York, Boone and company decided that Dominguez wasn’t ready to begin the year on the big league roster.

As shared by Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, the Yankees feel that Dominguez has more work to do to get where he needs to be.

“As talented a player as he is right now, there’s still so much more for him to get to,” Boone said. “It’s a crazy game. He could be back before you know it. And the one thing I do think is, he’ll impact our club in a way this year.”

Boone also opened up with praise for the young outfielder. He likes what he has seen from Dominguez this spring.

“One of the things I told him is that I’m proud of him,” Boone said. “He walked into this camp with all kinds of conversation around him. It didn’t affect anything in the way he carried himself, day in, day out, the way he worked.”

What’s Next for Jasson Dominguez With the Yankees?

There has been a lot of speculation about what the future could hold for Dominguez. The honest question reverts back to trying to find a long-term place for him to play consistently.

Due to those swirling questions, trade rumors have surrounded Dominguez. If the Yankees want to make a big splash ahead of the MLB trade deadline this year, the 23-year-old outfielder could be the centerpiece of a deal.

In 149 Major League games so far, Dominguez has hit 16 home runs and driven in 58 RBI. He has also produced a career slash line of .248/.327/.397.

With spring training winding down, Dominguez has hit three home runs, driven in 10 RBI, and slashed .325/.378/.600 with a .978 OPS. After that kind of performance, fans were disappointed to see that he didn’t make the cut.

It will be interesting to see what the future has in store for Dominguez. He could still work his way up to the Majors and become an impact player for the Yankees. But, that journey in the big leagues won’t continue to start this season.
