ELON – Behind a perfect doubles point and several efficient singles performances, the No. 72 Elon women’s tennis team (10-3) sprinted to a 5-0 sweep against Queens (0-11) on Saturday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
The Phoenix swept all three doubles matches, winning all 18 games contested across the three courts. It was the first time since March 22, 2019, against Maryland Eastern Shore that Elon won all three doubles matches by a 6-0 score.
Elon carried its momentum into singles, rolling to four straight-set victories. The Phoenix lost just four total games in the four singles wins.
The Rundown
Elon blitzed Queens in doubles, winning 6-0 on all three courts to take a 1-0 lead.
Back together at the No. 2 spot, Madison Cordisco and Alexis Nyborg posted the first Phoenix doubles sweep. The duo improved to 3-0 together this spring, with all three wins coming at the No. 2 position.
Cornelia Kack and Lisa Kranec finished their sweep shortly after to secure the opening point for the Phoenix. It was the pairing’s seventh straight victory and 10th of the spring, the most on the team. They have won their last seven outings by a combined score of 42-13 and have not dropped a game in either of the last two matches.
On Court 1, Simone Bergeron and Mariana Reding finished off the perfect doubles point with their own 6-0 win. It was the eighth win of the season for Elon’s top duo and the second to come by a 6-0 score.
Elon has now won seven of its eight doubles points at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center this season.
Bergeron added another pair of 6-0 sets in singles to finish the day with a perfect 30-0 mark in doubles and singles games. The junior swept Mathilde Bris on Court 2 for her seventh win of the season and first by a 6-0, 6-0 scoreline since Elon’s CAA Tournament first round match against Monmouth on April 25, 2024.
Kranec dropped just one game in her singles match on Court 5, sweeping Rachel Byrne aside in a 6-1, 6-0 win. The result matched Kranec’s most efficient scoreline of the spring as she also dropped just one game against NC Wesleyan on Feb. 6. The sophomore is up to six wins on the season.
Reding delivered another convincing singles win on Court 3, dropping just a single game in a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Sofia Benhaddouch. It was the junior’s eighth consecutive singles victory and her team-best 11th of the spring. The win was Reding’s second straight to come via a 6-1, 6-0 scoreline after Reding also posted that score in Thursday’s victory over UConn.
Nyborg got over the finish line in singles before the final two matches were halted, with the junior winning 6-0, 6-1 against Jett Coetzee at the No. 4 spot. It was Nyborg’s eighth win of the spring and matched her most convincing performance of the season, as she also just lost one game in the NC Wesleyan sweep.
Cordisco and Kack were both up a set when their matches were stopped.
Bergeron went 30-0 in total games on the day with Kranec, Nyborg and Reding all going 30-1. In total, Elon won 66 of 70 games in the completed doubles and singles contests.
The win was Elon’s third straight as the Phoenix improved to 9-1 at home on the season.
Elon has swept its opponent in six of 10 wins this season.
