If you’ve driven down Willow Avenue recently, you may have noticed major changes at the longstanding Sunoco gas station and mechanic shop at the corner of 13th. Construction is taking place and the pumps are completely removed, which has prompted questions about what’s going on. We looked into what’s actually confirmed, what’s still unclear, and what this could mean for the neighborhood of uptown Hoboken if the Sunoco is gone for good.
What’s Going on at the Site
This past week, parts of the Sunoco property were blocked off/sectioned off, and construction is currently underway. There has also been discussion circulating online, including in a Reddit thread, where Hoboken residents are speculating about a potential closure or redevelopment.
A source close to the project confirmed that the Sunoco is turning into a development by Red Bridge, with condos and retail space.
Current Status of Sunoco (spoiler…not much online!)
As of now, there has been no official announcement confirming that the Sunoco gas station on Willow Avenue is closing or being redeveloped, despite it being closed. There are also no publicly reported records (so far) indicating a finalized sale of the property, approved demolition permits, or a specific new development tied directly to this site. HOWEVER, in the bigger picture, it is in the zone of the North End redevelopment area, and sources close to the project say that this area will also be redeveloped into apartments by Red Bridge.
So while nothing has been confirmed about this specific property besides online speculations and some insider sources currently, the Sunoco sits along Hoboken’s North End redevelopment zone, which has already been approved by the city.
According to reporting from NJBIZ, the plan for this area includes 700+ residential units, retail space, public open space, and a parking garage throughout this corridor. The broader redevelopment covers the 1500 block of Willow Avenue, nearby the gas station + mechanic shop.
