NYCFC welcomes Inter Miami CF to the Bronx on Sunday afternoon, riding high on momentum and confidence, with an opportunity to make a statement early into the season.
After four matches unbeaten to start the 2026 MLS campaign, NYCFC sits atop the Eastern Conference standings as it prepares to host Inter Miami CF at Yankee Stadium.
“To keep it very simple, it’s the quality that we have within the team combined with the passion, the hunger, and the desire that this team has created going into the 2026 season,” head coach Pascal Jansen said ahead of Matchday 5. “The benefit of having almost the same roster and a few additions helps you start at a higher level than the previous season.”
That continuity has shown early. The Boys in Blue have paired their tactical flexibility with a clear identity built on control. Whether it’s grinding out a result or adapting at halftime, Jansen’s side has found ways to remain unbeaten while steadily improving across the pitch.
Now, they look to build on momentum with another test in the Bronx.
“That is a question I really like,” Jansen said when asked about the role of the fans. “If you go back to the previous home games we’ve played, you see there’s a massive interaction between what goes on on the field and the fans in the stands. Knowing that this is a very important game for us as well, and everybody’s looking forward to it, obviously, being in the place that we are at the moment, I think the fans can play a massive, massive part in helping support our team on Sunday again. If you look at the previous home games, you can tell there is so much energy from the stands, and we hope we get that from our fans again on Sunday.”
NYCFC’s foundation has started at the back. Captain Thiago Martins has anchored the defense into a unit that continues to grow into itself game by game.
“As defenders, we want clean sheets every single time. Of course, sometimes it’s not possible, but I feel like we need to keep working on that. We know we have Matt Freese behind us and he’s going to help us for sure. But if we can keep teams outside our box, it’s better for everyone. It’s better for the team, and for sure we can keep more clean sheets.”
The Brazilian center back also emphasized the developing chemistry along the backline, with partnerships building early in the season.
“I feel like the way we approach the game and the way we practice every day helps us understand each other and understand the qualities of our teammates. We are building that. It’s not going to be perfect every single time, but all the guys are on the same page to help each other and be the best version of ourselves to help the team.”
That growing cohesion will be tested against the reigning MLS champions.
Inter Miami arrives in the Bronx sitting third in the Eastern Conference, but with something to prove after being knocked out of the Concacaf Champions League midweek. Their star-studded lineup will pose a difficult challenge that will demand defensive discipline and attacking efficiency from NYCFC.
Early on in the season, Sunday’s matchup carries the weight of a postseason fight between two Eastern Conference contenders.
