Jefferson Community College is retooling its education and campus to better prepare for Micron’s arrival.

The college announced that the business school, housed in the Dulles building, will be retooled as tech-centric classrooms and labs.

What You Need To Know

Jefferson Community College is renovating one of its buildings to be able to offer labs and classes on the kind of technology used by Micron.

The school says it will also work to partner with public education to encourage those in K-12 to learn more about this technology and the offerings coming to Jefferson.

JCC says it cannot be left behinid when it comes to offering students this type of education that can lead to careers with companies such as Micron.

Daniel Dupee, the president of JCC said the changes go beyond renovations alone.

“We’re putting in the ability to do engineering technology, advanced manufacturing and mechatronics. So, we’re going to start looking at actual degrees and programs and trainings around that,” Dupee said.

On top of the changes to curriculum and their campus, Jefferson Community College hopes to work with local K-12 districs to foster growth in technology-related fields.

“We’ll start having those students get an earlier introduction to advanced manufacturing mechatronics and all that, and then come here to school after they’re out of K-12,” Dupee added.

Micron will bring thousands of new jobs to Central New York, the company said. Jefferson Community College says they want to make sure they’re preparing students to fill those roles.

“We’re hopefully going to have a lot of really good jobs less than an hour away from this campus. We want to make sure that we’re providing the program that helps us move in that direction,” Durpee said.

There is no concrete timeline for the project yet, but the school said it hopes to have the renovations and changes to its curriculum ready in the next 18 months.
