The Historic District Council’s annual preservation conference returns in April with a deep dive into the preservation of manufacturing in the city. Each year advocates, policymakers, and other professionals are brought together to highlight best practices and share their experiences on a chosen topic.
Three moderated panels will explore the current realities, analyze how historic industrial buildings can play an important role, and look at the future of industry in the city. Among the panelists are Micaela Skoknic, director of development and communications for Southwest Brooklyn Industrial Development Corporation; Cassandra Smith, senior project manager at Greenpoint Manufacturing and Design Center; Rick Cook, founding partner with COOKFOX Architects; and Carly Baker-Rice, executive director of Red Hook Business Alliance.
The Making it in New York: The Preservation of Manufacturing conference will take place on Friday, April 10 from 1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Baruch College at 151 East 25th Street in Manhattan. Tickets are $35 for general admission, $25 for seniors and friends of HDC, and free for students. More information on the program and registration details can be found at the conference page online.
The focus on manufacturing will continue after the conference with a series of walking tours this spring. The first, on April 18, will be a two-hour tour through the Brooklyn Army Terminal. On May 16 the focus will be on the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and the final tour, on May 26, will look at Manhattan’s Garment District.
