Congressman Ritchie Torres (NY-15) announced Monday, March 23, that he has received the endorsement of Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (CA-11) in his bid to get reelected to Congress. As reported, the congressman recently hosted Pelosi at the New York Botanical Garden for a Women’s History Month celebration.
“Congressman Ritchie Torres is a deeply devoted public servant and a tireless advocate for the Bronx,” said Pelosi, who, as reported, was previously invited to The Bronx by former Congressman Jamaal Bowman (NY-16) in March 2022 for a community town hall held at the College of Mount Saint Vincent Athletic Center in Riverdale.
“Every day, he brings the needs and voices of his community to the halls of Congress with integrity, energy, and purpose,” Pelosi added. ‘Ritchie’s leadership on affordable housing, public safety, and economic opportunity has made a real difference for working families. He represents a new generation of Democratic leadership, leading the fight to defend our democracy from Donald Trump. I am proud to endorse Ritchie for re-election because the Bronx and our country are stronger with his voice in DC.”
Reacting to the endorsement, Torres said, “Speaker Pelosi is the matriarch of American politics and the most consequential legislative leader of our generation,” said Congressman Torres. “She broke the highest glass ceiling in Congress, passed historic legislation when the margin for error was slim, and showed the world what fearless, principled leadership looks like. To receive her endorsement is one of the great honors of my life in public service. The Bronx will always fight alongside the women and leaders who fight for us, and there is no greater fighter than Nancy Pelosi.”
The endorsement from Pelosi adds to what the congressman’s campaign team said is a growing and diverse coalition in support of Torres, whose district, one of the poorest in the United States, stretches from the northwest of the borough to the South Bronx.
The congressman has also received the support of Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic minority leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, who also represents parts of Brooklyn. He previously said of his colleague, “Ritchie Torres is an extraordinary fighter for the Bronx and for everyday New Yorkers. He shows up, delivers and never backs down from a tough fight. The Bronx deserves a representative with Ritchie’s tenacity, track record and commitment to getting real results for working families. I’m proud to stand with him and urge voters in NY-15 to send Ritchie Torres back to Washington.”
As reported, after prior rumors circulated that Torres was possibly mounting a challenge against New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, the congressman later announced his support for the governor.
Meanwhile, State Assembly Leader Carl Heastie has also endorsed Torres, along with several other Bronx elected officials, including Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, Bronx Democratic Party Chairperson and State Sen. Jamaal Bailey (S.D. 36), Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13), who represents parts of the West Bronx and northern Manhattan / Harlem, Assembly Member Landon Dais (A.D. 77), Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz (A.D. 81), and Councilman Eric Dinowitz (C.D. 11).
The congressman has also been endorsed by Bronx elected officials, Councilman Oswald Feliz (C.D. 15), Councilman Justin Sanchez (C.D. 17), Councilmember Pierina Sanchez (C.D. 14), Councilmember Kevin Riley (C.D. 12), Councilmember Althea Stevens (C.D. 16), along with the National Organization for Women PAC, the Benjamin Franklin Democratic Reform Club, based in the northwest Bronx, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Bold PAC (which supports progressive candidates), the Equality PAC, a political arm of the Congressional LGBTQ Equality Caucus, and the Congressional Black Caucus PAC.
