NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi | North Central Bronx Brings Novel Minimally Invasive Vascular Surgery Procedures to the Bronx

The procedures remove blockages from arteries to prevent stroke or amputation

NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi | North Central Bronx today announced it has begun offering two types of minimally invasive surgical procedures that were not previously available in the Bronx. The first procedure, Transcarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR), helps prevent stroke by removing blockages in the arteries leading to the brain. Compared to open surgery or traditional carotid stenting, TCAR offers a lower risk of complications or stroke. TCAR patients typically spend only one night in the hospital after surgery. The second procedure, Percutaneous Transmural Arterial Bypass (PTAB), prevents amputation by removing blockages in the arteries leading to the legs and feet. In comparison to alternative procedures, PTAB avoids the need for large incisions, reduces recovery time, and reduces the chances of complications associated with open surgery. Both surgeries are conducted by vascular surgeon Dr. Hayavadhan Thuppal, who brings nine years of experience to his new role at Jacobi Hospital.

Since offering these procedures at Jacobi Hospital, ten patients who had blocked arteries to the brain have been treated with TCAR, reducing their risk of future strokes. One patient has been treated with PTAB and is showing significant progress with their foot wounds, which have nearly healed.

“Both of these procedures demonstrate our commitment as a department and as a hospital to providing contemporary and safe treatments to our patients, while continuing to keep their care centralized and consistent at Jacobi and North Central Bronx Hospitals,” said Dr. Hayavadhan Thuppal, Vascular Surgeon at NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi | North Central Bronx.

“I was initially very nervous going into Transcarotid Artery surgery and anxious about the outcome,” said Liz, a NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi patient. “During my hospital stay, I received great care from Dr. Thuppal and his team. I deeply appreciated their attentiveness and commitment to my well-being. Thanks to the caring team, a challenging experience became much easier to endure. Their support made a significant difference in my recovery and overall experience with the surgery.”

Candidates for TCAR include patients who have had a stroke in the past or have asymptomatic severe carotid artery stenosis. Candidates for the PTAB procedure include patients who have severe peripheral arterial disease, which may include constant foot pain or non-healing wounds.

Dr. Hayavadhan Thuppal is a board-certified vascular surgeon based at NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi | North Central Bronx. He went to medical school at the University of Toledo, completed his general surgery residency at Montefiore Medical Center, and finished his vascular surgery fellowship at Allegheny Health Network, a 14 -hospital academic medical system with facilities in the greater Pittsburgh area across Western Pennsylvania and Western New York. Dr. Thuppal joined the faculty at Jacobi Hospital in September 2024 and strives to make vascular surgery and its innovations accessible to the Bronx community.
