Some charter school students in New York City are going beyond the cafeteria line, they’re helping cook the meals themselves.

At KIPP NYC College Prep High School in the Bronx, student interns in the culinary program prepare healthy meals from scratch and serve them at 14 KIPP schools across the city.

Students rotate through prep, production and service, gaining hands-on experience in a professional-style kitchen while learning about nutrition and teamwork. The program aims to teach valuable skills that extend beyond the classroom.

Mike Ioli, senior managing director of the KIPP NYC Culinary Team, and Ramatoulaye Diallo, one of the student participants, joined Rocco Vertuccio Sunday to discuss the initiative.
