NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — One traffic agent in lower Manhattan does more than make sure you can safely cross the street.
Guadalupe Rubino has captured hearts all across the city.
For two decades, the mother of two has worked all over the city as an NYPD Traffic Enforcement Agent and the past 11 and a half years under the Brooklyn Bridge on Pearl Street.
“I’ve been through 5 mayors, 8 Police Commissioners. It’s a blessing, it’s really rewarding because I can say I helped that person get to work on time or I helped that child get to school on time,” Rubino said.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, Rubino actually started as a school crossing guard in Coney Island in 2004.
Since graduating from the academy, she’s received countless awards for doing a job that’s literally a juggling act.
“There are moments where I caught myself and I had to take a deep breath,” Rubino said.
She’s had some near misses.
“There have been times when I know they came close when I feel my heart come down, I’m like wow that was close,” Rubino said.
But she admitted that most drivers follow her directions.
Her mindset is to keep calm and carry on.
