The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings hockey team claimed a silver medal at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference championship this past week, while the Queens rodeo team recorded several top 10 finishes at a spring event in southern Alberta.
At the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre on Friday, March 20, the SAIT Trojans defeated the Kings 3-0 in Game 3 of the best-of-five final to secure the conference title. The result earned the Kings ACAC silver.
Kings players honoured
Despite the loss, several Kings players were recognized with league honours. Forward Nolan Doell, a fourth-year player from Martensville, Sask., was named an ACAC Men’s Hockey Academic All-Canadian, the conference’s Top Scorer and a First Team All-Conference selection. Defenceman Tanner Sklaruk of Stony Plain was awarded ACAC Men’s Hockey Player of the Year and also named to the First Team All-Conference.

Meanwhile, the Queens rodeo team competed at the SAIRT Spring Rodeo in Claresholm from March 21 to 22, posting multiple strong performances.
Kaybree Zunti led the way with a first-place finish in barrel racing on Saturday with a time of 15.97 seconds and followed with a fifth-place result on Sunday (16.43). She also placed 10th in goat tying on Saturday (16.5) and fifth on Sunday (11.4), and added a third-place finish in the breakaway challenge on Saturday (3.3).
Teammate Elyse Terpsma, a welder apprentice, finished seventh in pole bending on Saturday with a time of 22.64 seconds.
The results cap a successful stretch of competition for RDP Athletics, highlighted by a conference medal in hockey and continued depth in rodeo events.
