STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Police seized more than 1,400 glassine envelopes of heroin and bags of cocaine from a 48-year-old man at the 123rd Precinct stationhouse in Tottenville, authorities allege.
In a separate incident the day before, Daniel Caraballo of Kentucky Way in Freehold is accused of stealing a car with Jenna Reynolds, 33, of Carlton Boulevard in Arden Heights. The defendants were arrested together multiple times in February and March, according to the criminal complaint and police.
The large amount of narcotics was recovered after officers spotted Caraballo and Reynolds walking in the street around 12:30 a.m. on Feb. 28 in the vicinity of Woodrow Road, Foster Road and Rossville Avenue in Woodrow.
Officers initially confiscated a knife, a glass pipe with burnt cocaine residue and a red plastic bag with residue of that stimulant from the pockets of Caraballo’s pants, according to the criminal complaint.
The criminal complaint alleges that Reynolds had drugs and paraphernalia in her jacket pockets. Officers recovered two plastic-zipper bags of crack cocaine and detected residue of that stimulant on a straw, a blue glassine envelope and four plastic-zipper bags.
Caraballo had a backpack with him when he was arrested and then taken to the stationhouse at 116 Main St. in Tottenville. The criminal complaint alleges that inside the backpack, officers found 1,401 blue glassine envelopes containing tan heroin powder. Additionally, officers seized 31 yellow plastic-zipper bags of crack cocaine, two clear plastic bags containing crack cocaine and powder, and two scales with residue of that stimulant.
In the afternoon on Feb. 28, police allegedly confiscated a glass pipe containing cocaine from Reynolds at the stationhouse, according to the criminal complaint.
Caraballo was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, criminal use of drug paraphernalia, criminal possession of a controlled substance, an administrative code violation of unlawful possession of a knife and a violation of pedestrian who failed to use the sidewalk.
Reynolds was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance and a violation of a pedestrian who failed to use sidewalk.
Alleged car theft detailed
The criminal complaint alleges that after getting off the Staten Island Railway, Caraballo and Reynolds stole a car on Feb. 27 around 3:45 a.m. in the 6900 block of Amboy Road near Page Avenue in Richmond Valley.
They drove off in a black 2024 Hyundai Elantra that was parked with the engine running at that location, according to the complaint.
“We were riding the train,” Reynolds is quoted in the criminal complaint as saying to police. “We got cold.”
She allegedly told police that they “got inside the car. I don’t know whose car it was. A couple blocks away, we left the car.”
She added that they abandoned the car “because we did not want to be in it anymore.”
Caraballo and Reynolds were charged with criminal possession of stolen property, grand larceny, unauthorized use of a vehicle and petit larceny.
Resisting arrest in March
Caraballo and Reynolds were passengers in a car when they were apprehended on misdemeanor charges on March 4 in the vicinity of Ellis and Arthur Kill roads, according to the criminal complaint.
A crack pipe allegedly was confiscated from a pocket of Caraballo’s pants.
The criminal complaint alleges that four glassine envelopes of heroin and a glass pipe with burnt cocaine residue were found in Reynolds’ jacket pockets. Three additional pipes tainted with cocaine were stashed in the glove compartment.
Caraballo, who was in the front passenger seat, allegedly hung onto the side of the car and tensed his body and arms in attempts to avoid being handcuffed, according to the criminal complaint.
Reynolds allegedly became irate and yelled at police after she exited the car from the back seat.
The defendants were charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance. Caraballo also was charged with obstructing governmental administration and resisting arrest. Reynolds also was charged with disorderly conduct.
Caraballo and Reynolds have pleaded not guilty to all charges, have been released on non-monetary conditions and are due back in state Criminal Court in St. George on April 29, according to public records.
Attorney Louis Gelormino defended the innocence of his client, Caraballo.
“Mr. Caraballo denies these allegations,” Gelormino said. “We look forward to a complete investigation of the facts and expect Daniel to be fully vindicated.”
An attorney for Reynolds did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
