Last week, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the creation of the Mayor’s Office of Community Safety, a modest first step toward the $1 billion budgeted department that he promised on the campaign trail.

The mayor said the office addresses the root causes of crime and will assist the NYPD in responding to calls involving mental health episodes.

Deputy Mayor Renita Francois joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Wednesday to discuss community safety and the responsibilities of the new office.
