ALBANY — Seven pets were killed Tuesday in a fire at a Second Street apartment, firefighters said.

Crews were called to the three-story brick building at 13 Second St. just before 3:30 p.m., Albany fire Chief Joseph Gregory said Wednesday.

While the fire was contained, heavy smoke filled the building. There was some smoke and water damage to the second floor. While there was no damage to the third floor, the five dogs and two cats living there likely perished from the smoke, Gregory said.

Firefighters had the blaze under control just before 4 p.m., Gregory said. No one else was injured. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
