ASHLAND, Ky. (WCHS) — A teenager has died following a house fire in Ashland, Ky., on Tuesday, officials said.

Brooklyn Johnson, 13, died at a local hospital after being rescued from a house fire in the 3000 block of Central Avenue, according to the Boyd County Coroner’s Office.

Crews were called to the home – occupied by seven people, including five children – just before 8 p.m. where heavy fire and smoke conditions were found.

Firefighters said they located Johnson in a bedroom and were able to remove her through a window. She was taken to a local hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

The cause of the fire, which affected three different structures, remains under investigation by the Ashland fire and police departments. Firefighters said there’s no indication of suspicious activity.

Counseling services have been made available to students and staff at Ashland Middle School, where firefighters said Johnson was a student.
